The DUPR algorithm explained in plain English — expected score, score differential, and the rules that make ratings move in ways nobody expects.
Since July 2025, DUPR scores you vs. what it expected — not just whether you won. If you were expected to win 11–4 but only won 11–8, you underperformed predictions. DUPR drops your rating even though you won, because you didn't win by enough. That's why "DUPR rating dropped after win" is one of the most-searched complaints in pickleball.
Yes — and this is the most confusing part for players. If DUPR expected you to lose 5–11 but you actually lost 9–11, you outperformed by 4 points. The algorithm rewards that. Your rating can and should go up. Under the score-differential model, beating the DUPR expected score matters more than the W or the L.
If the DUPR gap between teams is more than 1.0 points, DUPR may exclude the match entirely — meaning neither player's rating changes no matter what happens. This is one of the most-criticized parts of the system: you can upset a much stronger team and get nothing for it.
